Dear Parents,
Hope you all have a restful weekend!
The last week of January ended with amazing oral presentations about students` favorite celebration. I was impressed to view all the beautiful posters brought to school and how proud every student was to present it! Here is a picture of all the posters already hanging in the hall!
The month of February will be also an exciting one, with the Gregg LeRock concert, 100th day of school and Valentine`s day, and more! Please see the February calendar for all the important events.
On Thursday, February 4th, is Dance-a-thon event where every student is invited ti dance and have fun! The dance will take place during school hours and no payment is required. We thank you to all parents who made a donations that will give our class a chance to win a pizza party for the entire class!
Kind reminder: the 100th day is approaching fast and we would love to see everybody`s projects ready for that day!
Valentine`s Day- we plan to celebrate it after the long weekend, on Tuesday, February 16th. We are going to exchange cards/letters written in class during that day. Important: If your child wishes to bring cards to his friends for Valentine`s Day, than we request that he/she brings cards to every one in the class, as we strive to be an inclusive class.
Also, I would like to thank Ms. Singer and her son Tristan for the idea of creating mail boxes in our class: I have already mentioned it to my students, but did not give them a due date for this. Well, I think mail boxes will pair well with Valentine`s Day cards we are going to exchange. So, as after voting the majority of students showed interest in creating theses boxes, your child is expected to decorate a box ( no bigger please then a Kleenex tissue box) and bring his/her mail box to school any time before February 11th. After the Valentine`s Day, we are going to continue use the boxes for the rest of the year to exchange letters which is a great extra opportunity for students to improve on their written and reading skills. The letter that students write for their friends would have to be proofread first by the teacher.
Scholastic due date: Thursday, February 4, 2016. Please send your order with proof of your online payment (the code written on the order page) or the cheque payable to Scholastic Reading Club only, no cash accepted.
Due on Monday, Feb 1st : the science homework about family water usage. Please note that your child is supposed to record how much water is used in his/her family per day.
He/she should use the accompanying sheet to record
- in the first column, for instance, what activity is using water,
-in the second column: how many times water was used in his/her family to brush the teeth in a day,
- in the third column: how many litters of water are used to brush the teeth on average ( info found on other side),
- in the last column: do the math to find the total amount of litters used for this activity/per day. (please note the use of calculator and/or parental help is be required for the math part)
In Science, we are transitioning from Air and Water to studying Liquids and Solids this month. Also, this new unit is going to be our focus for the STEM fair, which will happen later in the year.
In Math, we are about to start learning a new unit in Measurement: mass, capacity, and more. More details will be sent home if necessary in the red homework duotang.
February is also Black History Month- we will be learning about this more during this time. More details to be posted soon. You could also introduce talking about this at home which will only enrich your child`s knowledge about regarding this topic.
As you know, every month we have an assembly held at school where we present certificates for different character traits students demonstrate at school. For the month of February the character trait is fairness. Congratulations to all students who are demonstrating positive character traits at school at all times!
On Monday, Feb 1st, your child we bring home a letter stating that you are /are not requested to book an interview with your child`s teacher. Please complete it and send it back to school asap.
Please email me asap if you plan to take your child be away from school the week before or after the long weekend, so I can plan accordingly the upcoming events and also topics to be taught.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at school for any questions/concerns you may have.
Have a nice weekend,
Mme Paraschiv

Please note the changes highlighted in red we as a class decided to make:
Project Super Celebration - poster + oral presentation - due date Monday, Jan 25, 2016
As part of the Grade 2 curriculum, we
are about to finish learning about Traditions and Celebrations in our families.
The final project for this unit “Super Celebration” will be done in two
parts:
Part1. The two pages written project to be completed
during class time - this part was already done in class and a copy was sent home on Friday, Jan 16
Thank you for helping your child find detailed information about his/her favorite family celebration.
Part2. Poster
+ Oral presentation
If possible, please help your child organize all the important details from the written copy to be displayed neatly and clearly
on the poster.
The following categories from the rubric page are mandatory to
be neatly copied on the poster:
-name of celebration,
-cloths,
-location,
decoration
-food, and
- traditions.
Important: colorful, meaningful and detailed pictures should be added to each rubric to make it a beautiful poster. Also, the size of the poster should be no less than 2 standard paper size put together or bigger. Be creative!
Second page is optional ( page where it`s written the title ''Super celebration''): your child can choose whether or not to copy it on the poster, as most of that information is repeated on the rubric page.
If you have any questions about these
activities, please contact me at violeta.paraschiv@tdsb.on.ca
Thank you for your ongoing support,

Dear Parents,
I am trying to book tickets for our class to view the following show. I am sending you this information before getting approved to check with you if there will be 4 parents who would like to volunteer to help us out that day.

Please email me directly if you can volunteer as soon as you can.
Please find below info and a link to the flyer.
GREGG LeROCK EN TOURNÉE!
Gregg LeRock performs high-energy concerts for elementary FSL students in major theatres across Canada. Teachers can choose between Immersion (entièrement en français) and Core French (bilingual) performances.
Concerts feature songs from Gregg’s JUNO nominated CDs as well as selections from the curriculum-based songs he has written for French textbooks For students, seeing a concert on a professionally lit stage, in an acoustically pleasing room is a magical experience that will last a lifetime.
And the teachers and parents have just as much fun as the kids!

Celebrating 100 days of school! Due date: February 11th, 2016!!
Dear Parents,
We will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Thursday, February 11th, 2016. I have many activities planned for the students on this special day and we need your kind cooperation to help us make it a success!
Part 1. - mandatory
On the 100th day of school I will have students present their 100`s creations to the rest of the class. At home, your child is to choose one of the following options below (or your choice), prepare and bring before or on the 100`th day of school.
Your child is to write, arrange and display in an interesting and creative way 100 some...thing. 100 may seem to be a lot, but breaking down the task and teaching him/her how to organize his/her time, will make it easier for your child to accomplish this project. For instance, writing 5 words a day for 20 days or 10 words a day for 10 days.
1. 100 French Words - he/she can read and understand. ( to be written)
Note: for even a bigger challenge, your child can organize his/her words in alphabetical order.
2. 100 French books I read
3. 100 French verbs, nous or adjectives
4. 100 wishes written in French
5. 100 ingredients to put together for a special 100th day snack, cake, etc.
6. 100 numbers higher than 100
7. 100 favorite movies
8. 100 word story
9. 100 favorite activities
Part 2. - optional - 100s T-shirt
Students are encouraged to make a 100s T-shirt at home. Students can wear it at school on 100th day. Your child is to collect and decorate his/her T-shirt with 100 anything. You can use an used T-shirt from home, or get a cheap plain white t-shirt. Brainstorm different items with your child and make it a family activity. There are no limits on what is to be used to decorate the t-shirt as long as the items cannot be picked off by the students during class. Here are some ideas: 100 keys, 100 pennies, 100 play dollar bills, 100 paw prints, 100 pompoms, 100 foam letters or numbers, 100 rubber bands, 100 shoe laces, etc..
************************
On the 100th day of school, students will get to display their project and we will count to see if there are 100 things. Please remind your child that he/she has to carefully count all the items at home! Grouping the items by 2s, 5s, 10s, or 25s is a good way to make the counting easier.
Your imagination is the limit! This project is an exciting way for your child to realize how much he/she has learned during the first 100 days of school in Grade 2!
Please be creative and enjoy!!!!
DUE DATE: February 11th, 2016!!
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
